Our firm has always attempted to create buildings that: - Have a low lifecycle cost and which require as little maintenance as possible
- Respond to climate and site conditions
- Make sensible use of materials
Our firm currently uses EcoDesigner to do all our energy modeling. We are able to do detailed energy requirements calculations, compare various options (such as materials, openings sizes, shading, orientation and location) to determine energy efficiency as well as carbon footprint. The software is integrated with our CAD software, allowing us to do these at any stage of the project, from design through to as built to support us in determining the most efficient design. All of our projects from 1998 are able to be put immediately through our energy modeling software. We are firmly committed to continually responding positively to the movement to ensure that buildings are sustainable and ecologically friendly. We do not believe that these buildings are more costly to the client. We subscribe to the belief that in addressing the problems faced by human kind and the planet that: "Doing something will cost a bit...Doing nothing will cost the earth" |

For it's CAD software, the firm has been utilising Archicad since 1996. All its workstations were converted full-time to it in 1998, when it became the exclusive CAD software used in the office. It is used throughout the stages, i.e. from conceptual stages, to detailing, through to contract administration. The software is a 3rd generation CAD software, treating the building as one information model. This allows for the creation of quick and accurate drawings. Changes to documentation are also quick and accurate, allowing the firm to easily adapt and improve on the designs. At any stage in the building documentation process, accurate 3-D's can be generated. 3-D's not only give the client accurate images of the building, but also assist engineers, quantity surveyors and contractors to construct the projects. The software also assists the client in the post construction management of the buildings, whereby it is able to coordinate all services and tenant requirements. In 2010, the firmed started migrating all new projects onto a BIMServer. This literally allows more than one person to work on one drawing sheet at a time, resulting in even greater efficiency and output. The persons do not even have to be in the same office or even on the same continent. The firm does it's own in-house training on the package. It is also a regular contributor to the Archicad users forum. This ensures that it uses the software to the full potential and is kept up to date with the latest developments. For energy usage models, the firm uses EcoDesigner. Being integrated into our CAD package, we can produce energy usage calculations, including carbon footprints within a few minutes for all our projects (from 1998). This allows us to try and test out various design options in order to achiece the desired energy efficiency. For more detailed and professional renderings and animation, Artlantis Studio is used. The firm is also an avid supporter of open source software. It runs Linux servers. |

Featured Projects
| Darus Salaam Centre - Laudium The planning concept revolves around the idea of structuring spaces around courtyards, which in turn are linked together via walkways off a central foyer. The Mosque courtyards, which also acts as a spill over space, allows for a breezeway to be established across the Mosque proper by drawing air from the landscaped North front of the Mosque, across a water feature, cooling the air as it does so.
